4DFrame Activity Tips:
6. Vehicles
What different kinds of vehicles are there? Build your own fanciful examples.
KomTek in Järfalla is a Swedish science- and technology-oriented activity centre
that regularly uses 4DFrame materials in its programs both in-house and with local
schools. Anna Nytomt Kristensson is one of their staff who works with this and she
shared this set of activity tips KomTek developed (thank you, Anna!) for using this
educational teaching tool.
6. Vehicles
What different kinds of vehicles are there? Build your own fanciful examples.
Main concepts 1-3 technology:
- Materials for your own design work, their properties, and how they can be connected.
Main concepts 4-6 technology:
- Own designs with applications of the principles of solid and stable structures.
- The different phases of Technology Development: identification of needs, investigating,
propose solutions, construction and testing.
Preparation:
- Discuss together what different kinds of vehicles there are. What is a vehicle?
- View photos and videos about vehicles.
- Fantasize together as a group about how would a vehicle that could take you over
a high mountain/through a swamp/through the jungle look like; what kinds of features
would it need to have?
Vehicles with 4DFrame:
- Give students the assignment to build a vehicle that would be able to reach some
particular place/have a special property/that’s available only at a certain location.
- Build their very own fantasy vehicle.
- In the 4DFrame activity book there are many examples of vehicles; see, for example,
pages 89 and 92.
- If someone has a hard time building something, a spacecraft can be made by following
the following picture.
- View each other’s vehicles and have the students describe them to one another.
Follow-up:
- Draw and photograph your vehicles.
- Write a story with the vehicle you made as the subject. Where shall they go? Who
went along? Did you encounter any dangers along the way?
